Do you remember when Vacation Bible School meant songs, cookies and the typical red Kool-Aid? Well things have come a long way from those days. The themes have become a bit more imaginative since I was a kid in Bible School. Today themes range all the way form wild animals, theme parks, splash lagoons, to space aliens. This year our theme was Crocodile Dock. Throughout the course of the program the kids were challenged to be on the lookout for "God Sightings". These sightings happen when we notice that God has been at work; when He has acted lovingly in a given situation. This was the purpose of our Vacation Bible School at First Church of God - Marseilles, IL.
The teachers were hoping for God Sightings, of that I am sure. We all had to trust God as we sought to cope with computers, projection equipment and so forth and the attending technical difficulties. Snacks, which once were simple, have been replaced by things that grow in the microwave, look like bowls full of living vermin or have names that make small girls say eeeee-oooooooo! Everything is more lively, videos are more exciting and crafts are more prone to blow up and spew colored glue on everyone.
The stage was decorated to look like a real Louisiana bayou/swamp. But in the midst of all of this excitement and display of technical expertise, we did in fact have God Sightings. That is the thing that has not changed: God is with us and He loves us very much.
We owe a great debt of gratitude to our Director Nancy Dunlap and all of the teachers, group leaders and snack helpers. Thanks go to people who help with the set and the decorations.
